'Careless' truckie: Update

-- Desmond Wilson, 45, the truck driver charged in connection with the death of a senior police officer, pleads not guilty

Traffic safety expert and Police Superintendent Steve Fitzgerald, 57, was killed last year cycling home from work, on Petone’s Esplanade, by truck driver Desmond Wilson. Could have been me. Could have been any one of us.

Truckers have far more training, and better visibility, than most car drivers, so this should make them better, not worse. Given that the truckers in Rotorua / Bay of Plenty are excellent towards cyclists, this focuses attention on city-based truckers. Like most city drivers, it stands to reason that city-based truckers are more stressed and tired than their provincial counterparts. So I say the problem largely lies with crap road management and traffic congestion, not (as much with) the truckers.
